Karuizawa is more than just a summer retreat for well-heeled Tokyoites. It is a highland community rich with galleries, museums, culture and history, all set in amongst verdant forests, soaring volcanic peaks and tumbling waterfalls and located just 65 minutes from Tokyo on the Nagano Shinkansen bullet train, accessible via the Japan Rail Pass. It has been an important stop for travelers dating back several centuries, and was a post-town on the old Nakasendo Way - the mountainous trail that connected the capital of Edo (present day Tokyo) with Kyoto. In the 1800s, Karuizawa was reborn as a getaway from the summer heat, under the guidance of Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw and English professor James Main Dixon. Today you will find many sources for inspiration - from contemporary architecture seen in villas, hotels and cafes that incorporate the natural landscape into their design, to the beauty of nature itself. Nearly everywhere in Karuizawa is photogenic.
