サム・エイベル（1945年オハイオ州シルバニア生まれ）は日常を撮影する写真家の中でも「マスター」と他の写真家から絶賛される偉大な存在です。
彼はナショナルジオグラフィックに写真が頻繁に掲載されることで知られているアメリカの写真家です。また、KFFの総監督、写真家 野辺地ジョージの師匠でもあります。
エイベルが写真を好きになったのは、写真クラブを主宰する地理教師であった父親の影響からです。著書『The Photographic Life』の中で、父親と出かけた先で撮った写真が、その後フォトコンテストで小さな賞を受賞したことに触れています。この写真が、その後の彼の人生の方向性に大きな影響を与えたと述べています。高校のイヤーブックと新聞ではカメラマンと共同編集者を務めました。
レキシントンのケンタッキー大学で英語学を専攻、ジャーナリズムを副専攻し、ケンタッキアン年鑑の編集長を務めた後に卒業しました。その後、教師、芸術家、作家としても活躍しています。
エイベルは2009年にトレド大学から名誉文学博士号を授与されています[1]。
サム・エイベルの著書『The Life of a Photograph』は、2000年に『Seeing Gardens』から始まった3冊のうちの1冊です。2002年には『The Photographic Life』に続いています。
彼のトークショウは、アメリカの写真界では最も感動するトークのひとつと絶賛され、野辺地氏含む多くの現役写真家は彼のトークを経験して人生が変わりました。第一回軽井沢フォトフェストのゲストスピーカーシリーズのアンカーは、サム・エイベルです。彼との特別な時間は決して忘れることはないでしょう。

Sam Abell (born in Sylvania, Ohio in 1945) is acclaimed by other photographers as a "master" of the everyday life.
He is an American photographer known for his frequent publication of photographs in National Geographic. He is also the mentor of KFF's general director, photographer George Nobechi.
Abell's love of photography was influenced by his father, a geography teacher who ran a photography club. In his book “The Photographic Life,” Abell mentions that a photograph he took on a trip with his father later won a small prize in a photo contest. He states that this photograph had a profound influence on the direction of his life thereafter.
He graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington with a major in English and a minor in journalism, where he was editor-in-chief of the Kentuckian Yearbook. He is also a teacher, artist, and writer.
Abell received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Toledo in 2009[.
His book, “The Life of a Photograph”, is one of three books that began with “Seeing Gardens” in 2000, followed by “The Photographic Life” in 2002.
His presentations on photography in everyday life have been acclaimed as one of the most moving talks in American photography, and many working photographers, including Nobechi, have had their lives changed after meeting Abell. Anchoring the Guest Speaker Series for the first edition of Karuizawa Foto Fest is Sam Abell. You are sure to never forget your evening spent listening to him speak.
