軽井沢フォトフェスト・メインイベントのゲストスピーカーシリーズ第2回目は、二人の謙虚な素敵な写真家夫妻です。素晴らしい人間性の持ち主である井津由美子さんと建郎さんは、それ以上に偉大な作家でもあります。フィルムで撮影する写真、特にプラチナ・パラディウムプリントで完成させる作品は息を呑むほど美しいものであります。
今回のトークの時、会場でもその美しき作品は展示されます。

井津由美子 プロフィール
1998年アメリカ、カリフォルニア州のブルックス大学写真学科を卒業。2003年より大型カメラでプラチナ・パラディウムプリント技法による『Secret Garden』を制作開始。2016年に『Secret Garden』と『Faraway』を収録した写真集『Resonance』を出版。2017年から微細な鳥の巣と羽根の抽象的イメージで成り立つ『Icarus』を東京、台北、バンコク、サンタフェ、パリのギャラリーで発表。2020年に東京のBOOKMARCにて、故ソール・ライターのアトリエの写真集『Saul Leiter: In Stillness』の出版を記念して写真展を開催。2022年に最新作『うつろい』写真展を京都のお寺にて開催。2007年にニューヨーク州ウッドストックのセンター・フォー・フォトグラフィー奨学金受賞し、数多くの展覧会を開催。
井津建郎 プロフィール
1949年に大阪に生まれる。
日本大学芸術学部に在学中に21歳で渡米、以来2021年までニューヨークに在住、活動を続ける。現在は金沢在住にて作品制作と発表。
1974年ニューヨークでKenro Izu Studioを開設、コマーシャル写真の仕事をしながら作品制作を開始、ライフワークとなった『聖地』シリーズは1979年から始まった。
聖地の濃密な空気感を捉えるために密着プラチナ・プリント技法を使用し、そのために14x20インチのカメラ・ネガを得るカメラを特注、1985年から2016年まで『聖地』を制作した。
他のシリーズとして、『永遠の光』にてインドのヒンドゥー教徒の誕生から死に至るドキュメンタリーのシリーズ制作。2013年〜2016年
『レクイエム』イタリア・ポンペイにおいて1900年以上前に火山の噴火で発掘された人々を悼む作品。2015年から2017年。
『抚州：忘れられた大地』ダムによる水没と過疎で消えゆく中国の歴史ある地域を取材した作品。2017年から2019年。
『もののあはれ』の一部としての『能』作品を2018年から日本を舞台にして始まる。現在も進行中。
『Sacred Places』（2001年）をはじめとして『Eternal Light』(2016)『無常：50年の旅』（2022）まで20冊の写真集を刊行。
作品はMetropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (Washington D.C.), 清里フォトアートミュージアムなど数多くの美術館に収蔵されている。
アメリカ連邦芸術基金、ニューヨーク芸術基金、グッゲンハイム基金などを受賞。

The second in our series of guest speakers for the Karuizawa Foto Fest Main Event is a duo: two humble and wonderful photographers who happen to be husband and wife. Yumiko Izu and Kenro Izu are great human beings and even greater artists. The photographs they make using film, especially those completed on platinum palladium prints, are breathtakingly beautiful.
Their beautiful prints will be on display at the venue at the time of this talk.

Yumiko Izu Profile
Yumiko Izu graduated from Brooks College of Photography in California, U.S.A., in 1998, and began working on "Secret Garden" with a large format camera using platinum palladium printing technique in 2003. In 2017, she began showing "Icarus," a collection of abstract images of minute bird nests and feathers, at galleries in Tokyo, Taipei, Bangkok, Santa Fe, and Paris.
In 2020, she published a book of photographs of the late Saul Leiter's studio, "Saul Leiter: In Stillness," at BOOKMARC in Tokyo. In 2022, her latest exhibition, Utsuroi, was held at a temple in Kyoto, Japan. In 2007, she was awarded a scholarship at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, New York, and held numerous exhibitions.
Kenro Izu Profile
Born in Osaka in 1949.
Moved to the U.S. at the age of 21 while a student at Nihon University College of Art, and lived and worked in New York since then until 2021. Currently resides in Kanazawa, where he produces and exhibits his works.
In 1974, he opened Kenro Izu Studio in New York and began creating works while working in commercial photography.
To capture the dense atmosphere of holy lands, he used a close contact platinum printing technique, and for this purpose, he specially ordered a camera that produces 14x20" camera negatives, and produced "Sacred Places" from 1985 to 2016.
He also made another series of documentary photographs of Indian Hindus from birth to death in "Eternal Light," 2013-2016.
In "Requiem," he mourned those excavated in Pompeii, Italy, who were buried by a volcanic eruption more than 1,900 years ago. 2015-2017.
Xinzhou: The Forgotten Land, a series about a historic region of China that is disappearing due to submergence and overpopulation caused by dams, 2017-2019.
"Noh" masks as part of "Mono no aware" began in 2018, set in Japan. Still in progress.
He has published 20 books of photography, including Sacred Places (2001), Eternal Light (2016), and Mujyo: A 50-Year Journey (2022).
His work is in the collections of numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (Washington, D.C.), and the Kiyosato Museum of Photo Art.
He has received awards from the Federal National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation.
